What is volumetric weight?

Volumetric Weight (Dimensional Weight)

Volumetric or dimensional weight is a method used in eCommerce logistics to determine how bulky a package is in relation to its actual weight. It is calculated as the product of a package’s length, width, and height, divided by a courier-specific constant.

We determine the chargeable weight based on the greater value between the actual weight and the volumetric weight.

Formula: Volumetric Weight = (L × W × H) / Constant
  • L = Length (in cm)
  • W = Width (in cm)
  • H = Height (in cm)
Example constants:
5000 → Express Couriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS, etc.)
6000 → Air Freight Shipments

Tip: We charge whichever is higher — the actual weight or the volumetric weight.

How to Calculate Volumetric Weight?

Volumetric Weight (Dimensional Weight)

Volumetric or Dimensional Weight is a method used in eCommerce and logistics to determine the chargeable weight of a shipment. It is calculated using the formula below:

Formula: Volumetric Weight = (L × W × H) / Constant

The constant value depends on us. If the volumetric weight is higher than the actual weight, we base the charges on the volumetric weight.

Example:

  • L × W × H / 5000 → for express couriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS, etc.)
  • L × W × H / 6000 → for air freight shipments
L = Length (cm)
W = Width (cm)
H = Height (cm)

Note: The courier charges whichever is higher — the actual weight or the volumetric weight.

  • Frequently Asked Question

Volumetric weight is calculated by multiplying the length, width, and height of a package in centimeters and dividing the result by a volumetric factor, which varies depending on the courier company. The formula is often expressed as (L x W x H) / Volumetric Factor.

Volumetric weight is a theoretical weight of a package based on its size and is used by courier companies to determine shipping costs.

Actual weight is the physical weight of the package measured on a scale. The courier charges are based on either the volumetric or actual weight, and the higher of the two is used for pricing.

Actual weight is calculated by measuring the physical weight of a package using a scale. Simply place the package on the scale to obtain its weight.
